Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) and Taiwan Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers’ Association (TEEMA) enter new partnership to drive innovation, trade, and investment opportunities
(Taipei—October 23, 2024) Today, at the Taipei International Electronics Show, (TAITRONICS) Ontario and Taiwanese manufactures marked a new chapter in their ongoing collaboration by unveiling a partnership between the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) and the Taiwan Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers’ Association (TEEMA). Driven by a shared goal to foster innovation, promote trade, and catalyze investment promotion and opportunities, this new strategic partnership will bolster Ontario and Taiwan’s leadership in the global manufacturing supply chain.
“The signing of this MOU marks a growing collaboration between Ontario and Taiwanese companies in areas of significance like semiconductors and electronic component manufacturing,” said Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. “We congratulate OVIN and TEEMA on this new partnership and look forward to the exciting work ahead”
This partnership builds on Ontario and Taiwan’s trade relations by tapping into OVIN’s role as the provincial flagship initiative for the automotive and mobility sector and TEEMA’s mission to provide a platform for cooperation between industry, government, and academia to advance the development of electrical and electronic products. As part of this bilateral partnership, OVIN and TEEMA will foster connections among respective stakeholders, explore opportunities for enhancing support of small- and medium-sized enterprises, and facilitate investment discussions.
To explore the potential for Taiwan-Canada technological and trade cooperation, and to further establish and deepen bilateral supply chains, TEEMA organized a delegation to Canada, led by Managing Supervisor Winner Yu, from September 8 to 14 this year. The delegation included TEEMA members such as Tron Energy, Asia Hydrogen Energy, Merry Electronics, Asus, and ITRI, representing sectors like EVs, semiconductors, and smart manufacturing.
“TEEMA has over 3,000 member companies involved in ICT integration and production, electronics component design, and manufacturing. We look forward to further development and technological collaboration with Canadian enterprises, facilitated by the partnership with OVIN,” said a TEEMA spokesperson.”
In support of this collaboration, OVIN and TEEMA will identify opportunities for cooperation and growth across common fields of interest. These include sharing technological expertise, exploring collaborative research opportunities, co-hosting bilateral and multi-lateral initiatives, and cross-promoting activities. Together, the two organizations are poised to drive innovation, the commercialization of leading-edge technologies, and both regions’ leadership in the global market.
“Ontario leads the world in technology and manufacturing, serving as an epicentre of innovation and economic growth in North America and across the globe,” said Raed Kadri, Head of OVIN. “With this new partnership between OVIN and TEEMA, Ontario continues to unlock new investment opportunities while deepening its reach in the global market. Our province is well-positioned to build a resilient and sustainable end-to-end EV supply chain that will be unrivalled globally”.
As the two jurisdictions enter this new chapter of collaboration, this strategic partnership between OVIN and TEEMA will be pivotal in enhancing trade and cross-border cooperation. With two-way trade for merchandise and services between Canada and Taiwan valued at nearly $14 billion in 2022, this partnership will establish a stronger, closely integrated manufacturing corridor for semiconductors, electric vehicles, and smart mobility between North America and Asia.
“This partnership between OVIN and TEEMA represents a significant milestone in strengthening Ontario’s leadership in the global manufacturing and automotive supply chain. By collaborating with Taiwanese manufacturers, we are opening new pathways for innovation, investment, and economic growth that will benefit both regions,” said Claudia Krywiak, President and CEO of the Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI). “Ontario’s commitment to advancing cutting-edge automotive and mobility technologies is unmatched, and this partnership will further enhance our capacity to drive global leadership in electric vehicles, semiconductors, and smart mobility solutions.”
